Dr. Roberta Chinn, Assistant Director of Psychometric Services, and Dr. Greg Hurtz, Psychometric Consultant, presented a paper entitled "Evidence that key features problems assess higher-level cognitive processes" at the Association for Medical Education in Europe's Ottawa Conference held in Miami, Florida in May 2010. A key features problem consists of a clinical case scenario followed by several "stand alone" questions that require practitioners to prioritize and select the most critical (key) steps, actions, or decisions necessary to resolve clinical issues.
